I used to keep a tarantula, and the reason I love spiders is entirely because of Atlach-Nacha. If you haven’t played it, you should buy it right now. That’s how absolute this work is to me.

People yearn for beings that are noble, beautiful, uncanny—something elegant and inhuman. Hiraka Hatsune, the jorōgumo who appears in Atlach-Nacha, is portrayed as exactly that.

The story opens with Kanako, the protagonist, being attacked by a group of sleazy delinquents late at night in the gym storage room. Hatsune, who has been nesting within the school, kills them simply because they’re “ugly.” From the very moment she appears, she’s depicted as a seductive and cruel creature who lives by prioritizing her own sense of beauty. I’m already completely undone from the early chapters.

A higher existence that treats petty, vulgar human values—and human life itself—as something light. Long black hair like spilled ink, a black sailor uniform, and a jorōgumo called “Nee-sama.”(a highly respectful Japanese term for an older sister)

This work pours all its energy into making that “Nee-sama” shine at her fullest. The relentlessly dark atmosphere and the Japanese-style sound design are incredible, but what really deserves special mention is the delicate writing and the poetic dialogue. To express her beauty, you need prose worthy of it—and this work has that. In other words: it has everything. And because of that, I ended up forever captured by Attract-Nakua—by the absolute existence that is Hiraka Hatsune.

I want to encounter more works that fully, unflinchingly depict an intelligent, noble, absolute kind of heroine. The Perfect Insider (Subete ga F ni Naru) and Mōryō no Hako are also works like that. Please, experience them too—and like me, let yourself be bound for life.
